The best of Ecotect & SketchUp: Project Vasari

Posted by Justin Firuz Dowhower, AIA, LEED AP on November 29, 2010

Autodesk recently developed a quick design/analysis tool called “Project Vasari.”  The tool focuses on conceptual building design (parametric massing) and provides energy/carbon analysis results.  Many of the analysis features are what you would find in Autodesk’s Ecotect and Green Building Studio products – the difference here is that it works seamlessly with Revit and the conceptual design process is far more intuitive (not unlike SketchUp).  After you finalize tweaking the massing design, the Vasari model can be brought directly into Revit without losing any data.  A free trial download of the software can be found here.

I am curious if this product will remain as a separate software tool or if it will eventually become part of the Revit bundle.  Either way, it is a good step in the right direction.

Chapter 7: Future Research – Uploaded!

Posted by Justin Firuz Dowhower, AIA, LEED AP on August 2, 2010

And finally, the last chapter of my thesis has been added, which outlines related topics of inquiry.  These topics would either benefit and be of benefit to the research I’ve compiled.  The discussion categories will undoubtedly touch on a few of these in the near future.

Chapter 6: Recommendations – Uploaded!

Posted by Justin Firuz Dowhower, AIA, LEED AP on August 2, 2010

As a way of trying to apply the research conclusions, I proposed stakeholder-specific recommendations oriented towards leveraging the capabilities of BIM.  This chapter is definitely in need of further development, but it is a start.

Chapter 4: Case Study: The Alley Flat Initiative (AFI) – Uploaded!

Posted by Justin Firuz Dowhower, AIA, LEED AP on July 30, 2010

Chapter 4 has now been uploaded, which gives an overview of The Alley Flat Initiative.  This is an ongoing urban affordable/sustainable infill housing partnership between many stakeholders (both for-profit and non-profit) in Austin Texas.  This is perhaps the first initiative of its kind to propose the use of BIM as a means for improving the affordability and sustainability of its housing projects.

Chapter 3: Building Information Modeling (BIM) – Uploaded!

Posted by Justin Firuz Dowhower, AIA, LEED AP on July 30, 2010

I’ve uploaded the chapter covering BIM in terms of it’s definition, current/future trends, and available software technologies.  It is worth reiterating that BIM is the combination of both social process/workflows and technological software/hardware tools.

Chapter 2: Methods & Methodology – Uploaded!

Posted by Justin Firuz Dowhower, AIA, LEED AP on July 29, 2010

I’ve uploaded the nitty-gritty means and methods used to collect data.  This chapter further defines the scope of my research.  Obviously, there are more topics outlined in this chapter than I had time to thoroughly investigate.  Hopefully some of these topics can be further discussed and investigated here.
